Shock and Awe

By: Gianfranco | June 24th, 2009

Yes I am a Milan fan, and I root for my Motherland, but there comes a time when one must appreciate a job well done. Hats off to the my homeland and the USMNT for an amazing win!

My good friend and former teammate said it best in a frantic voicemail, “Maybe they turned a corner, maybe they just figured it out, but make sure you watch this game because it is the biggest soccer upset I have ever seen!”

Please visit the USA page at the World Cup Blog for the aftermath of this AMAZING day.

“A.C. Milan communicate they have reclaimed Ignazio Abate. The footballer returns to the Rossoneri on a permanent basis” I read that somewhere today but didn’t believe it. Good stuff.

GREAT GAME by the USA. (my homeland)
I’m not their biggest fan, I actually prefer Spain over any national team because it is where my ancestors are from on both sides, but the USA showed some heart out there today… I hate L.donavan but he played well today, I am big on J.Altedor (spelling?), for a young kid, he played very well and scored a great goal.
    FORZA USA.
and as always FORZA MILAN!!!!!!!!!!! my favorite team in any sport for life!!!

Rubbish.Wanted to see a Spain: Brazil final. But USA played well. Maybe South Africa will win today, and we’ll see a SA vs USA final.
I hope Abate has been bought back to stay, and not loaned out again.

who knows, we still need a LB desperately. Janks is LM and is shocking at LB, or maybe Oddo will be RB and Zambrotta will be LB? we still need the depth, hope it still goes through

Our additions to the squad so far are:
Michal Miskiewicz (GK, Age 20) from AC Milan U20, was on loan; Matteo Bruscagin (Defender, Age 20) was on loan; Digao was on loan; Oddo was on loan, Marcus Diniz was on loan his return was mentioned on the official Milan site (unusual in my opinion if he is not to stay); Ignazio Abate, Milan bought the other half off Torino, Kingsley Umunegbu and Willy Aubameyang, both strikers. Sandro Bloudek will return from his loan spell in August. What do you think of these players? I believe only Miskiewicz and Abate would be good additions, whereas it would be good to have another striker in Aubameyang or Umunegbu. The rest will probably be either sold or sent out on loan again.

Livorno also bough the other half of Perticone. Paloschi stays another year in Parma. Other part owned players for AC Milan are Di Gennaro, Antonelli and Astori. Does any of you think it would be good to buy one completely back of the latter three? I’d like Antonelli and Astori to return.

To me, Di Gennaro and Abate are just what Milan needs at this moment.

As for USA-Spain, USA played a good tactical game and deserved the win in the end (although if the Spaniards were a bit luckier they could have equalized). However, I must admit I was looking forward to a furious final between Spain and Brasil. As it is, warned by Spain’s failure, Brasil will probably crush the American team in a routine manner.

usa would throw a tactical thing at brazil – e.g., lasso kaka (like they did xavi, aggressive defense and occasional attack. if brazil can score first and early, the rest should come easy…

I posted this on the other thread, but if Italy had played the way the US did, Italy would have been scorned by every pundit.

I give credit to the US because they played the way a team has to play when facing a quality side like Spain. But let’s be honest, they played incredibly defensively (only it’s called “anti-football” when Italy does it), they embellished and simulated to get Spain players booked or waste time, and they scored on only two sucker punch attempts on goal.

It was a good win for them and a great defensive performance. I’m just surprised at all the admiration being given to the States. Maybe people are seeing the value in playing a compact game and defending well, and when Italy does it in the future, the insults will be at a minimum.

1st half S. Africa tactics against Brazil – foul like hell, fall down every time an opponent gets near you, put everything into every shot. the somba boys better score first otherwise it could get real ugly…
