Rosso, Nero, e Azzurri

By: Gianfranco | June 5th, 2008

When the Euro 2008 kicks off the Rossoneri will have five players on squad and coach who has given us many memories of success when wearing the Red and Black.

The Don

He has caught a ton of flack all over the offside.com but let his record speak for itself: 13 wins, 3 draws, and 2 losses it seems the Don has finally found some comfort in the rather large shoes of being the Azzurri mister. Starting with his formation, to his player selection he has been under a critical eye and heavy scrutiny and has used direct blatant honesty to silence his critics. One has to admire his ability to get the most out of players like Toni, DiNatale, and FabQuags en route to scoring close to two goals per game during his reign. He has also been very frank with his selections, and hopes to be rewarded with performances from ADP and Crazy Cassano, both of whom have lackluster records in the Euros.

It is really nice to see a Milan man as the captain of the ship and it should bode well for the Rossoneri on the squad.

Pirlo

What is there to say about this guy that we have not said already? He is the creative engine of club and country and if he is on then the team will soar much like it did in the WC. His ability to dictate play and find the perfect passes linking the defense and the forwards is truly an art. His one of a kind ability will be heavily relied on by the squad, but if you remember the smile on his face during the WC you have to believe that Pirlo is a big time, big game player. With the help of his right hand man you have to envision great success for the midfield maestro.

Rino

The second half of Milan’s dynamic duo of Rino and Pirlo also figures to favor heavily in the Don’s lineup. While many of lean towards the DeRossi bandwagon it is hard to justify DDR in place in Rino when you see the chemistry that he has with Pirlo. When Rino is on form he frees up space and time to let Pirlo work his magic, and with the amount of minutes those guys have logged together it is tough to argue that they are pair to be picked for the winning eleven.

Ambro

After his great campaign at Milan this season I figure the Don to use Ambro occasionally, but not in a strong role. Ambro’s defensive abilities far outweigh his ball skills and if a game needs to be shut down in the center of the pitch then expect an appearance from Ambro. What he lacks in creative touch he makes up in industrious play and ability to mix it up in front of opposing goals. Even if he doesn’t figure into the starting role he will, in my opinion be a first choice midfield sub when the 70th minute rolls around.

Borriello

19 goals for Genoa have earned Milan’s newest player a spot on the Azzurri squad. It is hard to argue with his inclusion but the competition up front is fierce. Borriello is versatile in his ability to play both in the middle of the pitch and on the wing but with the likes of ADP, DiNatale, FabQuads, and Crazy Cass it will be hard to find a spot to play. One figures the Don to go with the hot foot, and whichever striker is able to capitalize early on their minutes will most likely see continued action throughout the tournament. In this hybrid 4-3-3 system where the strikers are out of line it will be important to find the best mix early and stay with it, with or without Borriello the Azzurri will should have a formidable attack.

Zambro
Zambro will more than likely be the starting wingback paired with either Panucci or Gross on the opposite side. We all know what he is capable off and you have to hope that he finds his form early to assist in the attack as well as close down on defense. He plays one of the most fundamental positions in the Italian system and you can’t help but be excited to watch him cracking up and down the flank.

It seems that for every Milan player the Don has included he had to leave one behind most notably WC06 winners: Oddo, Pippo, and Bonera. You have to feel for guys left off the squad but you also can’t argue with the lack of form in the latter half of the season from Oddo and Bonera. You could make an argument for Pippo but when you compare his season to the likes of ADP and Cassano, the argument seems to stop in book.

I have to admit I have high hopes for this team in EURO 08, but understand that the group is difficult and the likes of Spain, Portugal, and Germany lurk in the later rounds. I like to believe though that if Italy can work its way out of the group of death than their confidence will be high and their play will be strong to make a push for the final.

Want to share a little fun that the Azzurri boys had in training…

SORRY LADIES…

The husband was the one relaying the information to me, from reading La Gazzetta online, and he said he thought there might be something else they’d offered him in addition to the 1.5 million - some other incentive - but I don’t know what that would be, and I didn’t read the article myself.

The Gazzetta on line story says the deal is for “around 1.5 million euro”, no mention of anything else.

I wonder what that incentive could be, if there is one.

Phew, good to hear Maldini is staying on!

But to repeat what i said earlier today……Wat all Milanista SHOULD be asking is “is this 40 mill that is earmarked for a new striker the same money that should be thrown at Maldini to keep him on another season?”

Or even….Has some of this 40 mill BEEN raised by halving Maldini’s current wage???

Im assuming his wage cut will be due to the fact that he wont play every match next season but dont like the idea of keeping him on at a cut price really!

It a bit of an insult i feel and a bad signal to any future Maldini’s

i.e after incredible service……this is what u can look forward too!!!!

    Hardly incentive! :-(

    Two other bits of news.

Watched a press conference with Arsene Wenger where he was asked about Adebayor and the link to Milan, his answer was fairly robust, it sounds like we are dreaming about landing Adebayor.

I know that this is the expected response, but Wenger sounded rock solid in his reply…………and i for one, believe him!

Also Peter asked about us snatching a CL spot via Steaua Bucharest getting kicked out of next seasons CL, early reports are adamant that Milan will NOT be in next years CL.

Theres just NO way that UEFA will entertain a fifth Italian team, regardless of co-efficients or previous precedents.

yah we as fans are somewhat insulted. He is one of the best, if not best and most loved Milan players in Milan history. and they couldnt offer him 1.5 million. at least Paolo said he did what he felt best for Milan.

“Maldini è del Milan e il Milan è di Maldin”

and some striker transfer news. Bronzetti officially said today to Sky that he had a meeting with Etoo’s agent and they had agreed to a 4 or 5 year contract worth 5 million euro per year. now Eto’o must just approve (which is likely) then the final negotiations with Barcelona will start.

over here each one of us has a certain striker they want to get. but we kinda all agree that any of the listed players will do. me personally Eto’o is my first option, meaning ill be very happy if he comes. then Drogba, ill be a little bit skeptic and Adebayor very skeptic.

i just hope we can get that striker, hopefuly Eto’o by next week. so we can breathe a bit easier. Abbiati, Zambro, Flamini, Borriello & *****

honestly i dont want to be in the CL like that. we simply dont deserve it, thus we shouldnt play there. last time was hectic and our position was 4th in the league after all.

as soon as the last game in serie a was over, i told my friend(juventino) i wouldnt be surprised if Viola wont be eligible for CL or anything happen to some team ending Milan back in CL, and i kept repeating it all the time. my first words would be the Big Bosses are working their magic. thats why i posted that picture yesterday here. and as soon as the news of Milan making it back to CL, my friend called me and was in shock and laughing.

i dont think Eto’o will be in jail. its just being blow of of proportion because he is a famous soccer player “celebrity”. how many people head butt each other every single day around the world? and how many are now in jail?!

if it goes to worst case scenario, the journalist would settle for a small payment. and if Eto’o was with Milan, the Big Bosses will take care of it ;) as they did with the journalist who black mailed Milan/Gila with photo’s of Gila and Berlu;s daughter or something like that.

Fetyani, those Gila and Little Silvio pictures got swept under the rug pretty quick, I dont even remember how it turned out. I wouldnt doubt if Milan had some folks to help makes things “go away.”

I think the blackmailing was a little worse that berlu’s daughter…It was supposed to be of a weekend romp with someone but it wasn’t berlu’s daughter or a female from what I remember.

Im still not 100% about Eto’o Fet.

Watched him at Barca this season and he looked off.

If we REALLY have to spend 40mill on a striker (i’d rather it went ton a smash and grab on Ramos @ Madrid!) why not Benzema who is actually in form and not running around headbutting peeps??

Ramos will never leave, he is the future face of Madrid.

and i agree, my first striker is without a doubt Benzema, but apparently he is not up for sale now. and i think even with the striker we get this off-season we should be first in pole to get Benzema for whatever whenever. but i highly doubt it, a few other big teams will step up in front of us and splash whatever he wants. my dream fantasy transfers, which is not realistic for a dream is, Messi, Benzema, Quaresma, Ramos. Pato-Benzema. Kaka-Messi-Pirlo-Gattuso. does it really matter if we even have defense after this point lol.

Watchd the Swis Czech match today, got to say Jank sucked.

Looked like he’d taken tips from Oddo on how to make wayward passes into the box before he set off for the Euros.

Did anyone see his first free kick?? Suuuuuper weakass.

    Keep it up Janks!
