Rosso, Nero & Azzurri, Onto the Knockouts

By: Gianfranco | June 17th, 2008

Absolutely bittersweet today, so happy that Italy advanced, even more happy that Rino and Pirlo were their old selves, but heartbroken that the Azzurri will be without Rino and Pirlo for Spain, hope the best out of the possible pairing of Ambro and Aquilani.

Still not all that pleased with the team’s performance today, but a win is a win, and though I would have liked a bit more dominance, you have to hope the team can build off this.

Some observations from today…

-Toni should bench himself. His touch is shot, his legs are gone and his knack for the net is gone as well. I feel like he has aged in three games, I know how dangerous he can be but how man sitters can one man miss! I wish the Don had given Borriello a run in the last few of this game to see what the kid was made of.

-Cassano seemed to better DiNatale and ADP so he gets my bet for Sunday.

-Zambro really redeemed himself today, even though both he and Grosso did a lot less deep offensive work.

-Every Italy win seems to come with one great save from Gigi, Germany and France in 06 and France again today, he has to be the world’s best hands down.

-DDR showed me something today, but his crown can wait a little longer. He should thank TH14 for the sweet finish.

-When DDR scored it looked like someone pulled a bus off The Don.

-The Dutch B-squad may beat Italy in the case of a rematch.

-Spain is a great match up for Italy, more on that come the weekend, but I think they match up nicely because Spain likes to control the midfield and Italy is all to pleased to hold and counter.

Ambrosini has been better than Gattuso, if you ask me. His criticism was because De Rossi is that much better, we don’t have a better substitute for Rino though.

People are clamoring for Aquilani to go in. Should we throw him in without any experience? I dunno.

4-4-2- Perrotta, De Rossi, Ambrosini, Camoranesi

Alessio I think the only person who an remotely do what Pirlo does is Aquilani, granted there is no other Pirlo but their is no other choice really. If the midfield is DDR, Ambro, Simo, Camo there is no creative touch there to link the offense with the defense, its a tough spot. But I feel your concern, I just think this tourney has been so wacky, what do they have to lose.

Unless you play a midfield diamond, with Cassano or ADP at the top of the diamond and DDR Deep with Ambro and Camo on the flanks, that may acutally work out OK as well…

Montolivo should NOT have been dropped.. He would have subbed in for Pirlo perfectly..

    Some Milan news;

    - Apparently we’re bidding for Mutu now; 13 mil + Oddo + Simic..

    - Turan (the Turkish midfielder) is also on our radar..

    - Bronzetti says Dinho move still possible and reassures either Drogba, Eto’o or Adebayor will come..

    - Galliani confirms that Darmian is gonna be promoted..

Pippo in the azzuri! are you kidding me!

we should go with a 4-2-3-1 formation and I want to see Di Natale again, he did not play bad in hs first game and imprssed a lot during the qualification

    Buffon
    Zambrotta-Panucci-Chiellini-Grosso
    Camo-De Rossi- Aquilani-Perrotta/Di Natale
    Cassanno-Toni

Most importantly, NO AMBRO. He may play well in Milan but next game there is no Pirlo, Kaka, or Seedorf.

Milan have effectively ended their bid for Ronaldinho stating that they cannot compete finicially with the likes of Man City…

Not sure how to take that statement?

I’m OK with Aquilani playing. He is one of the few players that can adequately do what Andrea Pirlo does. And at age 23, I don’t think he is inexperienced. So many nations have allowed their “youngsters” to play: The Dutch have Snjeider who is 23, Spain has Fabregas (21) Villa and Torres (20 somethings as well), and those two nations are doing quite well. You also have the Portuguese, the Croatians and others. I see nothing wrong with Italy giving one of their brightest young players a starting spot even though it may be a quarterfinal. Aquilani can be the next Pirlo, and even though I admire his loyalty to Roma, I would love to see him in red and black someday.

Yeah Gian, I felt the same way about the statement. We can’t compete with Man City financially…but we won’t waste all that money on Ronaldinho when we can spend it on a variety of players? Maybe? Yay?

    Hana/Fet – This might explain:

Adriano Galliani admits Milan can not compete financially with Manchester City for the signature of Ronaldinho.

Milan have been long-time admirers of the 28-year-old, while Premier League club City have confirmed their interest in the former Paris Saint Germain ace.

Barcelona have yet to accept any bids for Ronaldinho, but Milan vice-president Galliani concedes the Italian giants can not match the wages City are prepared to offer.

“For now Italian football is ranked fourth in Europe behind England, Spain and Germany,” Galliani told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Unfortunately we can’t compete with the wages they offer.

“It is the way our football is going unless we change things.

“We’d like to offer Ronaldinho from Barcelona a chance of playing for us.

“Manchester City, though, have offered the Brazilian 12million euros a year. How can we compete?

“Well, only if they give him to us for free!”

So all this talk of spending 40mill on a striker (which i have suspected to be bullshit) turns out to be………bullshit!

To hear Galliani come out in public and say this is really hollowing.

I’d rather that he kept his bald trap shut!

No the transfer fee is not the issue, the problem is the fee plus wages cant be done, and I understand that. Very few clubs, Real, Chelsea, Inter, can pay huge transfer fees and huge wages as well. Most teams can do one or the other…

that was a bullshit yellow for pirlo, perrotta was down injured yet neither france or the ref would stop the game, and about 10 minutes later evra was down, cassano was about to break and the ref stops play for his injury? its hardly consistant refereeing is it?
for the next game i’d like to see perrotta-ddr-aquilani behind camoranesi-toni-cassano

@fetyani : lol, good gesture by canna.

Anyways, I think De Rossi and Ambrosini will do great, Ambro will play wall defending and De Rossi the pressing one, and DDR is technical enough to help the attack.

Just that Ambro has not been as good as in Milan, may be he (or Donadoni) should call Ancelotti to ask for advice where he did wrong.
