Italy v. Spain and PK’s

By: Gianfranco | June 22nd, 2008

It is games like today’s that breed superstars, not the media, and certainly not the fans. When the stage is a set for a big game the best of the best shine, it goes beyond the players, and beyond the coach, because when a team is hungry every last person pushes to the end.

Today was nothing short of a failure, and when the stage was set no one decided to shine…

We lost, we deserved to lose, but in the end, we will be back. (and hopefully with Lippi) But now it is back to the club football that we love. Milan will rebound this year and my beloved Palermo is hopefully rebuilding a winning squad,so to tommorrow as a new day. Salut my fellow Azzurri fans and Serie A supporters

the forwards were really disappointing. luca couldnt finish if his life depended on it. cassano was over hyped aparently. i have no idea what don was thinking with di natale. i really would have liked to see boriello on the pitch at some point this tourney.
luca wont be the focal point in two years, i hope…

Like everything, this does have a good side. What ? We get lippi back, thank God. Donadoni is an absolutely terrible coach, and made awful picks. Cassano played the best of anyone in hopes of creating a goal, but even he wasnt great, and the fact that he came out instead of toni to let di nat in was a disgrace. Donadoni out, Lippi in, 2010 here we come with a re-vamped, young, and hungry team…. forza azzuri

Almost harder than watching that final Spanish PK go into the net was watching Pirlo walk off the field in tears, being consoled by a teammate. They needed him out there today, and he knows it. I wonder now if their campaign ended with his 2nd yellow card…

But in the end, the Azzurri didn’t look good out there today. The back four were amazing, it’s the offense that was sorely lacking. Am I right in remembering that all our goals in this tournament came off set pieces? Clearly Canna wasn’t the missing piece, it was something going on in the front (namely Mr. Toni-Used-To-Score-Gols actually putting one in the back of the net).

I hope the team comes back from this disappointment with renewed strength for 2010.

Toni sucks, and It didn’t even once occure to Donadoni’s mind to bring Boriello into the game. I don’t know why, but I agree with NiDi that Donadoni is awful picker of squad, reminds me of Inzaghi… and Montolivo.

You were totally right Gian, Aquilani is not yet ready for this kind of game.

I dont agree with you guys all that much on Borriello, because Toni is supposed to be your war horse, and your guy that most of Europe regards at the top point man in the business. I dont buy into this type of hype, and I am the type of person that makes pick on form, fitness, and desire so for me Toni would have been gone in minute 46 of the Dutch and sat on the bench for the rest of the tournament, but had the Don done this he would have been crucified, and was in a cant win position. I will try to make a bit more sense of this later in the week when I can actually have more than two cohernet without swearing and blind rage…

Alessio – i hear you bro!

You choose between your preferred strikers and get stuck over who do u play out of Toni, Di Natale, ADP and Borriello but if u need a super sub there is only one SUPERPIP!

And we aaaaaaaaalllllllll know it, most of all Serie A fans would surely have wanted Pippo to go.

If at any point during this coming competition we are 1-1 with 5mins to go and none of the preferred strike options are making inroads, im gona picture Pippo watchin with his chin on his hands knowing how big a difference he could have made.

Don u have set out your stall, I hope angry Azzuri fans don’t come to kick it over after the tourney finishes!

SuperPippo would have helped a lot, but I think with the tactics the way they were, we were screwed from the start.

No one, not ADP, SuperPippo, etc, is going to win it for us if we’re playing a long ball to Toni.

But yeah, no killer instinct in Toni there.

Toni should have come off way earlier and Chiellini was outstanding. Very consistent.

Why Don stuck with Toni i have no idea but it was def a big mistake.

    Bring back Lippi!

I think Donadoni was faithful with Toni because Luca scored a ton of goals this year in the Bundesliga… but those numbers might be misleading because his Bayern team was much stronger than the rest of the league.

I also think Lippi would have done much better. Donadoni clearly wasn’t prepared, first because he hesitated with selecting the team and second because he wasn’t consistent with the formation and with giving players the same roles every match.

Yeah Jessica, that was what did it for me too. So hard to watch.

Yeah, KJ said everything that needed to be said. Spain deserved to win it, as much as Russia is awesome, I’m hoping Spain takes it all.

guys i have read some transfer news about milan over the past couple of weeks and Mr. Galliani did not sound convincing to me rather i think he is one of the most stupid people in football more stupid than donadoni. Nothing impressive has happened so far for milan for a good comeback. i don even know if milan will have a strong squad next season even for uefa let alone serie a. they will never win serie a with the way they are goin with their transfer plans. n i read fucking galliani reduced maldini’s wage while he offered a contract to ronaldo when there was almost no hope of him retiring. may be thats what he called loyalty and family club. m a juve fan though but i just want strong italian teams competinig with each other and beating the hell out of english n spanish teams which had not happened already for couple of years now.

the past few days have definatly been hard. i couldnt even watch germany and turkey today.
i’ve read through alot of comments, and i agree with a few that boriello should have gotten a chance. luca toni was pressing, he was trying way to hard to score a goal. perrotta didnt have such a good euro. he turned the ball over too many times, and didnt pose a serious threat at all while attacking. you cant point your finger at anyone individually for the exit in the round of 8, however i do believe that donadoni could have done better in choosing the squad and starting lineups. he should have never left out de rossi of the starting 11 against holland. i was in shock when pipo wasnt selected.
things look good in the future. i will look forward to defending the cup in south africa
